Family fun filled adventures at Moreton Island
Our observation (top) and middle decks are the best spots to enjoy the sea breeze and with some luck spot dolphins, whales and leaping fish. The play area at the front of our middle deck is perfect to keep the little tots busy, and for a special treat our cafe staff can swirl up a babycinno. Our onboard cafe also sells a variety of hot, cold, savoury and sweet snack foods including our pies served with our trademark sauce smiley face (we even have guests who have been coming for many years ask specifically for a smiley pie).
Moreton Island and Kids
The beauty of Moreton Island (other than the obvious unspoilt landscapes) is that it is The Island Escape that is easily accessible, economical, social with the locals, and without the crowd and commercialism – best of all you only have to cross Moreton Bay and not the seven seas to get there. While there are no specific child-friendly regulations, there are areas across the Island that facilitate this. Some examples:-
- there is a no drive zone along the Cowan Cowan beach strip, and in some areas at Comboyuro Point
- the Western beach is usually a safer swimming zone as opposed to the Eastern beach, while the Southern end past Tangalooma is more secluded with much less vehicle traffic
- Ben-Ewa, Blue Lagoon, Comboyuro Point and North Point Campgrounds all have toilet and cold shower amenities
- the Wrecks Campground is perfect for those traveling without a vehicle as it is within walking distance from the MiCat dropping off point
If you’re looking to add a little (or a lot of) adventure to your stay, we can organise guided snorkelling, sandboarding and Island tours. See the historic Cape Moreton Lighthouse and military bunkers, take a dip in the Blue Lagoon or Yellow Patch, or head out for beach fishing. The Castaways convenience store also sell fishing rods along with bait and tackle.
Accommodation and Kids
Moreton Island Adventures operates a family, no-frills style accommodation at Bulwer, which is a short 5 – 7 minute stroll to the beach front – Castaways Moreton Island. Units sleep between 4 – 7 guests, with dormitories sleeping up to 39 guests. All units and dormitories contain bunk-style accommodation, with at least 1 x freestanding or bunk-style double bed. Currently undergoing some renovations, Castaways has now added a restaurant to its fold and has expanded the local convenience store.
If you’re looking to get more in-touch with nature Moreton Island offers a wide range of fully-facilitated and site-only campgrounds around the Island. All campground enquiries and bookings need to be made through the National Parks website or call 13 74 68. The fully-facilitated Comboyuro Campgrounds is a short walk from Castaways Moreton Island – so you can still pop in for that family Sunday breakfast.
Organised Family Day Excursions
Moreton Island Adventures hosts a number of private and public events on Moreton Island and on our MiCat ferry. Coming up in January we will be hosting an Australia Day celebration. Discounted return foot passenger fares, including a sausage sizzle and drink. Free face painting onboard MiCat, and other entertainment and activities throughout the day on Moreton Island such as water activities with lifesavers.
A great way to celebrate birthdays, Christmas and other special occasions, our Moreton Marquee Beach BBQs are also a popular get-together among both corporate and private (family) clients, with guest number ranging between 15 – 120+. MiCat and Moreton Island Adventures can offer you more that just a family holiday – there’s plenty for those looking to catch a nice quick (or longer) break or adrenaline pumping adventure. Whether it be for family or just for adults – it’s Your Adventure. Your Way.
